Know Thy Self

In today's homily, the priest asked us if we know ourselves.

I wonder... How well do we know ourselves?  How do we know that that is us exactly?  Who dictates who we really are?

He discussed three valid points.  And now I sm writing my own thoughts on those three points.

First, identification by imitation.  As a child, one would always imitate the persons around him or her.  When we are taught how to read and other things, we always repeat as we are told.  And as children of God, we imitate Jesus and His holy ways, and His love for God the Father.

Secondly, identification by expectation.  At times we are described as how we should be as perceived by others.  Sad truth, society has a way of putting up norms.  And as we want to be accepted at times we live up to what is expected of us.  However, we should always know whose expectation to follow.  We should at all times put in mind that the greater glory is to belong in God's kingdom.  To attain that we should live up to Jesus' teachings.

Third and lastly, identification by imposition.  Somehow similar to the second except that this time it is not just an expectation but a command as to who we should be.  Whose command shall we fulfill?  Oh, what joy it is to know that we live by the reflection of the Father through Jesus.  We heed to the Ten Commandments and we Christ's sheep.

Only when we know ourselves can we let others know who we really are.

To God be the glory.
